Is it me ... Or has the world gone totally mad?

bagsofmoney

I don't think I'm about to enter into the politics of greed - but .... did I really hear what I think I heard?

The clearly very talented footballer that is/was David Beckham is looking for a new challenge so is leaving Real Madrid. Fair enough. However, the next sentence stuck in my craw just a tad when he said "It's not about the money" - That's $162,000,000 US

It's not that I doubt his talent, but can anybody really be worth a million dollars per week, or put another way £42 per minute for the next five years?

If you really want to find a new challenge try stringing a sentence together without "you know" or sending out Victoria with the prerequisite that she must return with no additional shoes, bags, houses, cars or £70,000 ear-rings.

I feel I need to justify myself - if anyone has worked for their salary then good luck to them and on one level I don't really care ... but this is more than some 3rd world countries entire aid budgets. It's the vastness of the payment that makes it almost obscene - at least to my mind.

Then I see in the news that we're worried that we're paying doctors £120,000 p.a. in flat rates and retainers with no real incentive to do anything. - Just skipping between stories that means Becks could fully fund 20 doctors for a year and still not notice he'd missed a months money...

Am I going totally round the twist or is something slightly rotten in the state of Denmark?

It's only people with vasts amount of money i.e. 10M+ who have the audacity to utter phrases like 'it's not about the money!' Z.

In my life experience I found that when we hear,
"It is not about the money" the reasonable person can be quite certain that, YES, It is about the money.

Cheers

Hi Q,

Thanks for the invite. I've added the link because I like your blog - reflective and intelligently written stuff. I must get a photo up one of these days as I'm now the ? on your blog. On the Beckham matter I've been reading a book which talks about the maximum wage for footballers which was abolished in the 60's. At the time players could only earn 20 quid a week. They weren't poor but even some first division players had a second job/trade which they continued to do while playing professional football. Changed days. The money earned now in the Premiership is disgusting. I'm proud of the fact that my club Hibernian (Edinburgh) imposes a wage cap of less than two thousand pounds per week on all its players meaning that the players are not living on a different planet from the fans who watch them. It's difficult for the club to keep good players for long though as they can go to Rangers/Celtic/England and earn ten times as much for sitting on the bench every matchday. I think the government are talking about trying to impose some sort of limit again but it remains to be seen if they have the power to do so.

He might have some sort of intention that he might change the face of football in America, but if he doesn't, I doubt if he will care.

I think it is crazy !!!

There is a gorgeous hotel / spa near where I live called Eastwell Manor and last year (or it might have been the year before) David Beckham wanted to book it up (the whole thing) for Victorias birthday - the only problem was a couple of "regular joe's" already had reservations for a room that day ... one of these regular joe's was related to my sister in laws fella ... so anyways ... so they could have the whole hotel to themselves, David Beckham paid off the mortgage on Mr Regular Joe's house ... one cheque ... the whole thing ! And then, they didnt even use the hotel anyway !!! Pocket change to them, a life's work to us.

I feel horribly greedy for charging the current going rate for piano lessons, which is less an hour than he will be paid a minute, and fairly regularly drop it when I know the person can't really afford it, but is keen to learn.

Beck's record 29 "You Knows" during an interview with Garth Crooks at the World Cup in 2002. Maybe he can beat it on ABC this summer!
